Terminal Servers/Concentrators - Potential Problems

There have been a number of potential problems reported with the use
of PROGRESS connecting via a terminal concentrator or a terminal
server. The problems can vary from one line of code causing a hang
or an unexpected hangup.

If you experience any of these issues, try to duplicate the problem
without the terminal concentrator. Instead try a direct connection
to the system. If the problem does not exist with the direct
connection, the problem is most likely the terminal concentrator.

The terminal concentrator should be able to be configured so that
it does not conflict with PROGRESS. A conflict can exist when both
PROGRESS and the terminal concentrator are using the same escape
sequence for different things. Terminal concentrators are devices
that should be transparent to PROGRESS (or any other software).

PROGRESS is an extremely complex application that must utilize almost
every escape sequence available. Terminal concentrators can also be
very complex, and may also rely on certain escape sequences to work
properly. If a conflict cannot be resolved by disabling a capability
in the terminal concentrator, then there is nothing PROGRESS can do.
PROGRESS works fine without the terminal concentrator;if we change the
core so that it works for the terminal concentrator, then it will not
work properly without the terminal concentrator.

The conclusion is that we have no plans to try and support specific
terminal concentrators. PROGRESS uses many terminal resources and
therefore has a greater chance of conflict with other
third-party applications (like terminal emulators and terminal
concentrators). The only option is for the third-party vendor to
work with the user to be compatible with PROGRESS.
