How to determine the version of a database backup.

GOAL:

Is there a utility to determine the version of a progress backup?

GOAL:

What version is the database backup?

FACT(s) (Environment):

All Supported Operating Systems

FIX:

There are no tools that will provide the version of a Progress Backup file. The proper or compatible version the software must be used to restore the file.
It is a trial and error method to determine which version of Progress will be required to restore the backup file.

Depending upon the version of the backup and the version of the restore utility the message received when opening the file can vary.
Some examples messages are:
ie:

using a 10.x prorest utility to restore or list the areas of the backup file produced in version 9.x results in the following messages:

Unable to complete version 177 restore with a version 9 backup.
!!! ERROR - Database restore utility FAILED !!! (8564)

Using prorest utility from Version 9.x against a backup file from a prior (ie 8) or post ( ie 10.x) version results in:

Can't restore a previous version backup with this version.
!!! ERROR - Database restore utility FAILED !!! (8564)

When a version 9.x or 10.x is used to restore or do a list of a backup file from version 8.3x the following is given:

... is not a Progress backup volume (1059)

Using prorest utility from version 8.3x to restore a 9.x or higher backup file results in the following messages:

SYSTEM ERROR: CRC failure on backup header block (1058)
file-name.bkup is not a Progress backup volume (1059)
