GOAL:

How to obtain a network trace file with AS/400?

FACT(s) (Environment):

Progress/400 DataServer.

FIX:

The AS/400 has the ability to provide traces over the network. The Network Trace files are useful when debugging networking problems with the Progress/400 DataServer.

1. Start System Service Tools with STRSST command. Then select options 1 (Start a service tool) and 3 (Work with communications trace) from the menus. The "Work with Communications Traces" screen appears.

2. Press F6 to create a trace. Enter ETHLINE for Ethernet lines in the configuration object parameter.

3. At this point you can run the network process you want to trace.

4. When finished, select option 2 to stop the trace and option 6 to print it.
(An interesting print option is "Format TCP/IP data only". Set it to "Y" and provide the IP address of the server and client you are tracing.)

5. The output is sent to the printer. You can retrieve from there using the WRKSPLF command.
