Windows NT crashes caused by motherboard option
As mentioned in KnowledgeBase document 18052 "Windows NT hangs or
crashes when running Progress", no application can crash Windows NT
or cause Windows NT to hang if the hardware and Windows NT operating
system are functioning properly. One of the advantages of Windows NT
is that no application, even if written improperly, will cause Windows
NT to crash or hang. However, a number of software problems, device
driver problems or hardware problems can cause hangs or crashes that
may be manifested only on certain applications including those written
in Progress.
One such issue recently discovered by Progress Software's Technical
Support department involves PC motherboards made by SuperMicro.
These motherboards are very popular and are used in PCs manufactured
by many leading manufacturers. These motherboards have an option for
"CPU MicroCode Updating option in the BIOS Advance Setup" that can
cause problems in Windows NT. Yet the same option apparently does not
cause any problems in Windows 95. This error occurs only when certain
instructions are executed, the errors may occur only in one
application (such as Progress) even though the only way to fix it
is via CMOS BIOS.
Details on this problem can be found at SuperMicro's Web site at:
http://www.supermicro.com/TECHSUPPORT/faqs/general.htm#Question 4.
While that document refers to Pentium Pro systems, one recent call to
Progress Software Technical Support indicates that the same issue
exists on some SuperMicro Pentium II motherboards. Turning that
option off on a SuperMicro Pentium II motherboard resolved a problem
of intermittent Windows NT crashes when running Progress on one
customer's PC.
If your Windows NT system crashes check to see which motherboard
is installed. SuperMicro motherboards may be found in many PCs
produced by many different manufacturers. If your system uses a
SuperMicro motherboard, look at:

lot of technical information about configurations and troubleshooting
various problems.
