FACT(s) (Environment):

Windows
Progress 9.x
OpenEdge 10.x

SYMPTOM(s):

Getting error connecting Progress Explorer to AdminServer on local Windows machine. Error reads:
error unmarshalling return; nested exception is:
com.progress.common.networkevents.EventInterestObject_Stub ; local class not compatible

No errors listed in admclnt.log.

No errors listed in admserv.log.

Connection seems to be established even after error has occurred but no component tree is listed below server.

CHANGE:

Machine was upgraded from 9.1x version recently.

CAUSE:

Custom installation script was made and class files from Progress were put in a Windows directory that was not removed by the Progress uninstall routine since the Progress install did not originally put the class files in that non-Progress directory.

Copies of Progress .jar and .zip files were placed in the Windows\java\classes directory.
This directory is searched in addition to the normal %DLC%\java classpath that Progress uses.

FIX:

Look within the %windir%\java\classes folder and any sub-folders to see if any Progress related jars or zip files (such as those in the %DLC%\java directory) exist.

If any exist in the %windir%\java\classes folder, remove them; reboot the machine and test again.
