8.3 Client/Server Connectivity
Version 8.1 servers in multi-user mode can access only Version 8
format databases. Version 8 clients in single-user mode (or
self-service mode) can access only Version 8 format databases, not
Version 7 databases.
Because shared memory formats are different between Version 8.0 and
Version 8.1, Version 8.1 applications cannot access Version 8.0
databases as self-service clients. Therefore, you must use the Host
Name (-H) and the Service Name (-S) parameters even if the application
and databases are running on the same machine.
Version 8.1 clients can make only network, not direct, connections to
Version 8.0 databases, Version 8 clients can make network connections
to Version 8 and Version 7 servers; they cannot connect to servers
from versions earlier than Version 7 (for example Version 5, 6.2 or
6.3).
