GOAL:

Is HP-UX Itanium emulation mode to support HP-UX PA-RISC binaries supported ?

GOAL:

Is Aries supported by Progress Software?

GOAL:

What is HP Aries?

FACT(s) (Environment):

HP-UX 11i Itanium
HP-UX 11i
Progress/OpenEdge Versions

FIX:

The HP-UX Itanium emulation mode for supporting HP-UX PA-RISC binaries is not supported by Progress Software.
Additional feedback: There is technically nothing to stop customers leveraging this emulation mode but they should be made aware that they are unsupported and performance is probably going to be a major issue (even when compared to native PA-RISC installations), any encountered problems will need to proven against a supported Progress Software platform.
Feedback from the field has shown that Progress V9.1E PA-RISC binaries can be installed and deployed using HP Aries with no reported errors or runtime problems. There have been several customer sites that have reported errors when migrating to 9.1E01, 9.1E02, 9.1E03 or 9.1E04 when configured in this manner.
The advice received directly from HP regarding PA-RISC emulation under HP-Itanium was to STRONGLY encourage our partners to adopt native HP-UX Itanium binaries, i.e. OpenEdge 10
HP-UX 11i Version 1.5 (B.11.20) includes Aries: HP's transparent binary compatibility solution for HP-UX/PA-RISC applications on HP-UX/Itanium platforms. Aries allows PA-RISC applications written for HP-UX releases up to (and including) HP-UX 11i (B.11.11) to run on Itanium-based systems running HP-UX 11i Version 1.5 (B.11.20). Aries supports both 32-bit and 64-bit PA-RISC applications.

PA-RISC binaries are any binaries provided by Progress software that are not built on an Itanium system. When Itanium operating system detects the use of PA-RISC binaries it automatically starts the Aries emulator to support them, which is akin to running the executables on VMWare.
