Windows NT locks, hangs or crashes when running Progress
** The following is for Windows NT only. It does not apply to
Windows 98, Windows 95 or Windows 3.1. **
Progress Technical Support occasionally receives reports of Windows
NT hangs or crashes when running Progress. However, Windows NT will
never hang or crash because of a faulty application. The Microsoft
specs for Windows NT insist that no application, whether faulty or
not, will ever cause Windows NT to hang or to crash. The particular
application may crash, but the Windows NT operating system will
continue to opeate, regardless of any problems within the application.
For instance, the following is from the Microsoft Windows NT
datasheet (available at:
http://www.microsoft.com/NTWorkstation/Basics/Features/
Datasheet.asp?custarea=bus&site=ntw&openmenu=prodbasic&highlighted
item=features):
"Windows NT Workstation 4.0 has the advantage of proven stability.
It eliminates costly disruptions in service by protecting
applications and the base operating system from crashes caused by
other applications. And, 16-bit applications can run in separate
memory space, providing crash protection for both 16-bit and 32-bit
applications. Critical operating system code, device drivers, and
data are also protected from applications, so that if one
application crashes, your operating system and other applications
are safe."
In short, neither Progress nor any other application can ever cause
Windows NT to hang or crash. Several customers have reported that
Progress crashed or hung the entire Windows NT operating system.
To date, every one of those reports has been proven false. Each
of those problems was eventually resolved by fixing something
external to Progress.
If Windows NT ever does crash or hang, the problem has to be
one of only three possibilities:
1. A problem within the Windows NT kernal
2. A problem with a Windows NT device driver (which is really the
same thing as #1 as device drivers are considered to be "inside
the kernal.")
3. Hardware problem(s)
In most cases of NT hangs reported to Progress Technical Support the
problems were eventually identified as either a faulty video driver or
a hardware problem (often intermittent). NT drivers for certain
video boards have caused several problems. In most cases, downloading
the latest drivers from the video board manufacturer's Web site has
fixed the problem.
Less-frequent causes of Windows NT hangs or crashes have included
problems with network drivers and any number of hardware problems.
Poorly-regulated AC power, poor grounding and/or static problems
will also cause intermittent Windows NT hangs or crashes.
