SYMPTOM(s):
Installation of Progress 8.2C on Windows 2000 hangs.
Progress 8.2C is certified on Windows 2000.
Installation of 8.2C successful on second Windows 2000 server.
Using Process Monitor program from Microsoft (Sysinternals.com) setup.exe is looping while accessing strange registry key:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Windows\CURRENTVERSION\Uninstall\?[]
The symbol after the ? in the registry is some unknwn binary character.
CAUSE:
This situation was caused by registry corruption.
Removal of the invalid registry key allowed the installation to complete.
FIX:
Setup.exe wasn't able to appropriately read what it expected to be pure text information when in fact it contain binary garbage. Remove the corrupt registry key.
