OpenEdge 10.x
Windows 2003

SYMPTOM(s):

Progress Explorer icon does not display menu to add server

Progress Explorer Tool displays only Progress Explorer icon

Can not add server in Progress Explorer.

Unable to add new server

AdminServer is running and works fine with remote Progress Explorer connection.

Same problem on all Progress and OpenEdge installations one the machine.

Re-registering prox.dll and proexptlr.dll does not solve problem

Re-installing Progress does not resolve issue

Re-installing Java does not solve the problem

Making jvmStart.exe as DEP exception does not solve the problem

Changing a content of %WINDIR%\java\packages does not solve the problem

CAUSE:

The exact cause is unknown at the time of this writing

FIX:

To resolve the problem: (example with 10.0B03 version installed on the machine).

1) stop all the 10.0B03 processes (adminserver/dbs)
2) backup DLC/properties/conmgr.properties and ubroker.properties to preserve db and unified broker definitions
3) uninstall 10.0B03
4) remove content (all folders) under/of c:\windows\java\
5) remove c:\windows\system32\msjava.dll

6) start regedit
7) if you have only 1 OE/progress version on this machine, remove HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PSC + the same for HKEY_CURRENT_USER
8) if you have more OE/progress versions on this machine, then only remove HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PSC\Progress\10.0B + the same for HKEY_CURRENT_USER
9) still in the regedit, now the tiring part, hit Ctrl+F and search for "progressexplorer" without "" - again, if you have only 1 version of OE/progress - delete ALL the keys having this string, if you have more progress/oe version, delete only keys (but whole keys, not only the entry related to 10.0B)
10) reboot the box
11) if you have 10.1B win32 install, or 10.1A, or 10.0B (more recent, better), hook it to the cd drive and run msjavx86.exe from 3party folder - it will install msjvm (10.1B and 10.1A cds have more recent version)

12) reboot the box
13) install 10.0B + patch + put back files from step 2)

Now the Progress Explorer will work properly.
