GOAL:
ACTIVEX - Support Statement for Windows Applications
FIX:
While the Progress documentation set does include examples for using COM objects (ActiveX Automation and ActiveX controls) with Windows applications, Progress Technical Support cannot provide customers with command syntax that will perform other operations beyond what is shown in the manuals.
For example, in the Version 8.2 doc set, beginning on p. 8-9 in the External Program Interfaces manual, an example is given for using ActiveX Automation with Excel. The specific example extracts information from a PROGRESS database and graphs the information using the automation objects provided with the Excel server in Office 95/97. For some users, this may be "close" to what they wish to do or completely different -- they might be using Excel but want to perform another function entirely, or they may not be using Excel and are trying to use ActiveX with another Windows application.
Progress Technical Support cannot assist in rewriting such example code to suit the individual needs of user applications. The examples in Progress documentation are not intended as a code set to be customized by Progress, but as a starting reference point.
Stated another way, Progress Software will not be able to carry out research or otherwise provide code for examples using the same Windows applications as shown in the manuals, or on Windows applications not shown in the manuals.
Nor will Progress Technical Support be able to provide users with with any third-party application's list of COM object methods or parameters. Users are referred to Microsoft or to their third-party vendor for more information on how to code using their applications.
If a customer believes that they are using the proper syntax and can demonstrate that this syntax works from other Microsoft applications aside from PROGRESS (such as Visual Basic) then Progress Technical Support is committed to helping to resolve any problems encountered. One exception to this is any macro recorded in VBA syntax that the programmer wishes to translate into PROGRESS. VBA code uses default properties that are not supported in PROGRESS. As a result, VBA code must be modified by making the default properties explicit. Progress Technical
Support cannot provide assistance in this undertaking, as this is again an issue involving Windows coding and knowledge of the third-party application in question.
Similarly, if the code examples in the Progress manuals prove to be erroneous for the versions of the Windows applications for which they are intended, then Progress Technical Support will help users to correct the problem and determine proper syntax. (Users should keep in mind that the shelf life of a Progress
documentation set will sometimes exceed that of an application version on the Windows platform. As a result, code using LATER versions of the Windows application may not work as shown in the documentation.)
Progress Consulting Services is available for users who believe they need assistance beyond the scope of what is defined in this document.
