GOAL:

What is supported on the IBM eServer with POWER Architecture Operating System Partitions?

GOAL:

Is OpenEdge supported on the iSeries OS with LPAR Partitions?

GOAL:

Is Power Linux / RedHat Linux for the eServer supported by Progress?

GOAL:

Is Progress certifed against IBM POWER 6

GOAL:

Is Progress certifed against IBM POWER 5

FACT(s) (Environment):

IBM AIX 5L
WINDOWS

FIX:

OpenEdge is ported to an operating system and chip type, Progress supports IBM eServer with POWER Architecture Operating System Partitions.

Support remains the same accross all platforms/versions: We certify/build our releases against an operating system and chip type, as the content of the Product Availability Guide and Reference reflects.

1.) As long as the provider (IBM) supports the OS on POWER 6, and we rely on thier backward compatibility (iow, we cannot expicitly test OpenEdge on every specific hardware configuration)
2.) As long as we support the OS (as per Product Availability Guide)

By way of example:

The IBM eServer (POWER 5+) machines are able to support multiple OS editions via their LPAR technology and OpenEdge is able to support most of them, but not the i5/OS (OS/400) operating system.

- Linux on POWER is supported by OpenEdge 10.1B and above:
In the Product Availability Guide and Reference - OpenEdge 10.1B Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS/ES/WS 4.0 is only one listed, therefore only one supported.
but under Linux (x86) AMD64 - EM64T, Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS/ES/WS 5.0 is also listed, meaning that Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS/ES/WS 5.0 has not been certified on the IBM POWER chip port for OpenEdge 10.1B.

- AIX 5L is supported since Progress 8: AIX POWER 5.1 (+ IBM patch 001), so essentially, as long as the AIX version is supported on the Progress/OpenEdge version intended to be used and that version is supported by IBM on their POWER 6, it's supported.

- Windows is supported by OpenEdge 10 and above.

- i5/OS (the new name for the OS/400 operating systems, although supported by IBM on POWER) is NOT supported by OpenEdge. There are no plans to provide native OpenEdge 10 functionality for the i5/OS operating system.
