Shared Network Installation - Netsetup Instructions
INTRODUCTION:
This document describes the correct procedure
for installing client software, version 8.2B+,
including the procedure informally known as
"netsetup". It also describes some symptoms
of an incorrect installation and how to resolve
these issues.
WHY YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS:
You need to know this because starting in version
8.2, the installation process differs significantly
from previous versions of PROGRESS. In addition
to copying files to the dlc directory, it updates
the registry and copies some dll files into the
windows system directory.
POSSIBLE SYMPTOMS OF AN INCOMPLETE INSTALL:
1) Random GPF's ..
2) Errors such as <filename>.dll not found ...
Solution? Follow Un-install directions below,
then re-install following the correct
installation procedure...
CORRECT PROCEDURE:
There are 2 places where the client software
can reside:
1) On the pc itself = local installation, or
2) On another machine (file server) = shared
network installation.
NOTE: It is possible to install the client
software and the database server software into
the same directory. This should be done with
caution however, as after the netsetup procedure
is complete, client machines will have access to
some server functions that may or may not be
possible from those machines. If the client
software and database server software will coexist
on the same machine, it is recommended that they
reside in different directories and that you
install the client software, from a client machine,
one that does not have PROGRESS already installed
on it. If you have the same version of PROGRESS
already installed on this client machine, and you
are trying to install to the network machine,
PROGRESS will not allow this. You must uninstall
it from this machine, or install to the network
from a different machine.
OPTION 1 - LOCAL INSTALLATION:
- Install PROGRESS on the pc from the cd-rom
drive of the pc
-OR-
- Install from a CD-image that has been copied
to your hard disk or from a mapped network drive.
OPTION 2 - SHARED NETWORK INSTALLATION:
Step 1 - Installing the client software onto a
shared network drive
1) From a client machine, that doesn't have the
same version of PROGRESS installed on it, map a
network drive to the directory on the machine
where the PROGRESS client software will reside.
2) Temporarily remove any environment variables
that define dlc or promsgs.
3) Put the CD in and install the client software,
specifying the shared network drive as the
destination path. Because this pc has installed
the client software onto the shared network drive,
it will not be necessary to perform "netsetup" on
this pc.
Step 2 - Performing "NETSETUP"
Follow these steps to perform a PROGRESS shared
network installation for each client machine.
1. Map a network drive to the shared directory
where the PROGRESS client software resides.
2. Run <drive>:\<source path>\netsetup\setup.exe
where source path is the path where PROGRESS was
installed.
TO UN-INSTALL PROGRESS:
To uninstall PROGRESS:
Use the uninstall icon.
To uninstall the PROGRESS shared network installation
from a Windows NT Version 4.0 or Windows 95 client
machine, use
tart menu -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove
Programs
To uninstall the PROGRESS shared network installation
from a Windows NT Version 3.51 client machine:
From Program Manager, choose the Shared Network
Installation program group and choose the
unInstallShield icon.
Note: When the usage count on a shared system
file reaches 0, the Remove Shared File? dialog box
appears. Not every program follows the Microsoft
guidelines for incrementing usage count, so it may
be prudent to allow the dll files to remain on the
system.
