FACT(s) (Environment):
All Supported Operating Systems
OpenEdge 10.x
Progress 9.1E
FIX:
Progress is only certified and supported for use with the cluster managers currently supported by the additional Fathom Cluster product in earlier versions or OpenEdge Cluster product (which is part of the Enterprise Database License only)
OpenEdge Release 10.1A (or earlier) support Failover Clusters on these platforms; as long as the OS version is supported under the Progress OpenEdge version:
Windows 32-bit, AIX 32, HPUX 32, HP UX 64, Solaris 32, and Solaris 64
Starting with OpenEdge Release 10.1B, the following new platforms also support Failover Clusters:
HP Itanium (IA64) - The clustering environment on HP Itanium (IA64) is identical to the HP UX (PA-RISC) 32- and 64-bit Failover Clusters environment.
AIX 64-bit platforms - The cluster software for AIX 32 and AIX 64 is now HACMP 5.3.
In all of the following platforms, Failover Clusters is installed as a component of the OpenEdge Enterprise RDBMS:
Microsoft Cluster Services MSCS V5.2 Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition (32Bit)
IBM HA Cluster (HACMP) 5.1- Only for OpenEdge 10.1A and below to 9.1D (32Bit)
IBM HA Cluster (HACMP) 5.3 - Only for OpenEdge 10.1B and above (32Bit & 64Bit)
IBM HA Cluster (HACMP) 5.4.1 - supported on AIX 5.3 only, for OpenEdge 10.1C03, 10.2A01 and above (32Bit & 64Bit).
IBM HA Cluster (HACMP) 6.1 - supported on AIX 6.1 only, for OpenEdge 10.2B01 and above (32Bit & 64Bit).
Sun Solaris Sun Cluster 2.2, 3.0, 3.1, 3.2
HP-UX Service Guard 11.0 & 11i (PA-RISC)
HP-UX Service Guard 11i (Itanium2) - Only for OpenEdge 10.1B and above
HP-Compaq Tru64 TruCluster 5.1 (no longer supported platform from OpenEdge 10.1C and above)
Linux:
There are no committed plans for Fathom/OpenEdge Clusters to support any Linux Cluster Manager in OpenEdge 10.x. As there are many different Linux Cluster Managers available, we are in the process of information collection from customers as to the specific version that they are interested in. Please contact Technical Support with the Linux Cluster Manager the customer is considering using.
Sun Solaris INTEL:
Failover Clusters are not supported on Sun Solaris Intel. Although Failover Cluster support for Solaris SPARC and Solaris Intel technically should be the same, we have only tested and certified the Sun Cluster Manager on SPARC hardware. Support for existing supported Solaris Intel platforms was dropped after Progress 9.1E so verification and validation of the Sun Cluster Manager on the Sun Solaris Intel platform has not been certified. Advice is to move to Solaris SPARC or Progress supported OS of choice for Cluster Managers on given Progress/OpenEdge version.
Windows 64-bit:
Running Progress/OpenEdge clustering feature ("procluster") on Windows 2003 64-bit is not supported.
In General:
The Progress RDBMS is not a cluster-aware application but can be configured to run in a shared disk configuration. Most clustering failover solutions rely on the shared disk configuration if failover on database-centric applications such as Progress is required. If that shared disk environment is managed and controlled by a cluster manager, there is no native integration between Progress itself and the cluster manager. The administration and configuration tasks needed to ensure failover of a Progress database within a clustered environment are the responsibility of the administrator for the cluster management software.
Thus, unless the Fathom/OpenEdge Clusters product is used, it is up to each site to ensure that the cluster is configured correctly and that the cluster itself runs so that it is transparent for Progress (i.e. looks like one machine). We cannot support how Progress might interact. with specific cluster management utilities, e.g. for running scripts.
