Printing Problems - How to Debug / What is Supported
FIX:
The following solution is offered to describe what types of
issues are supported by Progress Software. It is also
intended to assist in debugging the source of a printing
problem.
If you attempt to print from your application to the
printer, and the output fails or does not appear as you
expect, please follow these steps to aid in determining
the source of the problem, and to rule out possibilities
so as to narrow down the scope of the issue:
How to debug:
From your application or from a test module, try printing
to an Operating System file.
Check the contents of the OS file.
If it doesn't exist, this could be an application
issue or a system resource issue. A printer problem
can be ruled out at this point.
If the file content does not look as you expect it to
this is more than likely an application issue in the
way the file output has been set up.
If you receive an error in trying to print to an OS
file, this is also likely an application issue or a
system resource issue. A printer problem can be ruled
out at this point.
If the contents of the OS file are ok:
Try printing the file to the printer using an OS command
like "lp" or "print" depending on what is appropriate
for your OS.
If the file DOES NOT print with the OS command, this is an
Operating System issue. It is not a Progress caused problem
and this is proven because you have removed Progress from
the equation. The same is true if an error is received in
trying to print from the OS command level.
If the file DOES print from the OS command level and the
results are as you expect, then the failure to print from
your Progress application is likely due to a printer
configuration and/or setup issue within Progress and should
be investigated with your regional Technical Support Center.
PLEASE NOTE:
It is very important to differentiate Progress related
printing issues from system/printer configuration printing
issues.
Operating system resource and printer configuration issues
should be investigated with your operating system vendor.
While Progress may be able to offer suggestions, our
expertise is with the Progress product, and not at the
operating system level. You will be best served following
up with your operating system or hardware vendor for these
issues.
