Yes, You can place the schema holder on a remote NFS mounted devise on UNIX as long as the file system, Operating system and the progress/OpenEdge (including the service pack) version are the same. You can then use -RO connection to the schema holder to connect to the schema holder from the same operating systems and the Progress/OpenEdge (including the service pack) on the network.
