FACT(s) (Environment):
Progress 9.1E
SYMPTOM(s):
Remote clients randomly receive spill file I/O error vsapi.dll error code -33
Clients remotely connected to database.
CAUSE:
There may be multiple causes for this errors.
It has been observed with some network cards that the network card has either a power saving function or an automatic monitoring system which disables the network card if it sees a substantial period of inactivity.
This problem has also been observed with faulty network hardware or loss of network connectivity.
FIX:
If the problem occurs for relatively few clients in a large environment review the configuration details of the client's network card to see if there are any options which would disable the network card to conserve power in which case disable this option.
If the client has an inactivity monitor disable it.
If neither of these situations is true, consider replacing the network card of the client machine.
If multiple clients are effected, isolate if the clients have something in common (e.g. on the same network segment where they go thru a potentially faulty network switch or router, have the same model network card which has similar features, etc) see if one of the clients can be moved to a different network segment. If the problem disappears for that client but none of the others sharing the problem the network switch or router which the remaining clients share is highly suspect as the problem.
If multiple clients are effected and this is not limited to network segments this may indicate a problem with the network card of the server machine. Replace the network card(s) of the server machine and monitor to see if the problem disappears.
