FACT(s) (Environment):

RedHat Enterprise Linux ES 3.0
OpenEdge 10.x

SYMPTOM(s):

Linux crashes with Kernel panic.

Kernel build is RedHat AS3.0 on 2.4.21-27.

Trace looks similar to below and could be for any executable:
audit_filter_eval [audit]
....
audit_lock [audit]
__audit_policy_check [audit]
__audit_syscall_return [audit]
__audit_result [kernel]
syscall_trace_leave [kernel]
Kernel panic Fatal Exception

CAUSE:

This is a RedHat bug, with the service "audit". It either needs to be disabled or the kernel needs to be upgraded to the latest build.

FIX:

Upgrade to the latest kernel build or disable RedHat auditing .

1. Upgraded to kernel build 2.2.21-40
or
2. disable audit with:
service audit stop
