GOAL:

What are the advantages and disadvantages of raw partitions.

FACT(s) (Environment):

Progress 8.2X
Progress 8.3X
Progress 9.X

FIX:

Using raw partitions allows a user to circumvent the OS file system management structure. By removing this layer, it is possible to realize performance enhancement. However, the downside of doing this is that it may also prevent the OS from warning the user, when disk space is filling up, that it is about to overwrite a file.

Understand that making use of the raw partition functionality introduced in Progress 8.2, requires the effective management of the user's file system by the person doing so. NOTE: Progress cannot accept responsibility for any loss of data directly related to the use of raw partitions.

One further point to note is that raw partitions are still, at this writing, restricted to 2GB per file (or by volume size, whichever is smaller), the same as normal database extents.

Currently in latest Progress 9.1D and OpenEdge 10.0A the RAW partititions functionality is broken, which is under investigation of development. Please contact your Technical Support representative for more information.
