GOAL:
Can the Progress install be copied between like UNIX machines?
GOAL:
Does Progress support copied installations on the UNIX platform?
FACT(s) (Environment):
UNIX
Progress/OpenEdge Product Family
FIX:
The only supported method of install for Progress is to use the proinst command from our cd or a copy of the cd contents located on a hard drive. Technical support has seen instances where customers have copied in some fashion an existing Progress installation and restored the copy to another location / machine. At best there may be errors caused by differences in directory structures stated within our scripts within the copied environment. At worst files that the installation was dependent on may have existed on the original machine (where the proinst was able to validate their existence), but do not exist where the Progress installation has been copied. This can lead to erratic behavior or no functionality whatsoever. Even though copying the Progress installation from one UNIX machine to another is not supported, it may work providing the following conditions are met. 1. The OS version of the target machine is supported by the Progress version being copied, including the Progress Service Pack version.
2. The installation path of Progress does not change on the target machine. If the location changes on the target machine, items that were tailored during the original install process, e.g. Progress scripts, will be broken on the target machine.
3. Products upon which Progress has dependencies must exist or will need to be installed for correct functionality. The version of the supporting products should be identical to those which existed on the original installation machine or functionality or may be impaired or functionally unstable.
Example:
Current OS version is AIX 5.1L and Progress 9.1D05. New OS version is AIX 5.2. This is not a supported OS version for 9.1D05 and would likely cause instability or corruption.
