GOAL:
What may cause Error 231 trying to start ProService?
GOAL:
Why does using ProControl to start databases fail with Error 231 Communicating with ProService?
FACT(s) (Environment):
Windows
Progress 9.1x
Progress 8.x
FIX:
Progress Error 231 Communicating with ProService is usually the result of a background process preventing the communication between ProService (Windows Service) and ProControl.
Various 3rd party products for anti-virus, firewalls and/or backup software packages have been known to cause the errors.
If the vendor of the 3rd product does not have a means of addressing the problem, then disabling the 3rd party product is the only recourse when using ProService. With some products, placing Progress on the software's exclusion list resolves the problem.
If using Progress 9, it is recommended to use Progress Explorer Tool which relies on Java not a Windows service.
Some of the software that known to cause error 231 communicating with ProService are:
1. InocutateIt (eTrust) Anti-virus
2. Casper Sky Anti-virus
3. Panda Anti-virus
4. ZoneAlarm firewall
