GOAL:
Does Progress support Network disk drives?
FACT(s) (Environment):
Progress 9.1C
Progress 9.1D
Progress 9.1E
OpenEdge 10.x
FIX:
Progress has run tests to confirm this type of disk operation works. While we cannot issue a blanket endorsement for all NFS systems we have stated that we do support the storage of database extents on certain NFS installations. Progress uses OS calls to write data to disk, so as long as the NFS systems are using NFS v3 (as a minimum), and the systems can guarantee data coherency and consistency, then we support using those systems.
When a write is made across the network Progress depends upon the OS disk vendor to insure the write is made and not lost due to a network problem. Implementation of how to perform this or how they want to "guarantee" the process is up to them.
Progress always recommends that after imaging is enabled and this is even more important when the disk are on a network environment.
