GOAL:

How to recover a multi-volume data base if the .d1 has been lost

GOAL:

What to do if one extent has been lost in a multi volume database

FACT(s) (Environment):

Progress 6.x
Progress 7.x
Progress 8.x

FIX:

The following steps can be performed to ensure a minimal loss of data

Restore the last valid backup containing all extents
Make a ASCII dump of the restored database
Restore the missing extent from backup into the damaged database
Run IDXBUILD on the damaged database
Make an ASCII dump of the damaged database
Compare the two dumpfiles (if a UNIX system you can use the diff command) and use the damaged database to feed the database restored from backup with data that is missing.
Note that this will NOT GUARANTEE that all data will be recovered but it will minimize the loss of data
