FACT(s) (Environment):
SCO OpenServer 5.0.6

SYMPTOM(s):
Can not run proserve
Can not start a database using proserve
dynamic linker : <path to DLC>/bin/jvmStart : could not open /usr/lib/libthread.so.1
CAUSE:
SCO has stated that libthread.so.1 is not available for OpenServer 5.0.6. It is however available for OpenServer 5.0.7.
FIX:
Migration options for OpenServer 5.0.6 customers are:
a) Use Progress V9.1D
b) Upgrade to OpenServer 5.0.7 and Progress V9.1E (OS chargeable upgrade)
c) Upgrade to UnixWare and Progress V9.1E or OpenEdge 10 (OS chargeable upgrade - OpenEdge 10 chargeable 'trade in' upgrade)
d) Upgrade to OpenServer 6 and Progress V9.1E or OpenEdge 10 (OS chargeable upgrade - OpenEdge 10 chargeable 'trade in' upgrade)

A workaround of this issue is to use the _mprosrv executable to start database instead of making use of the proserve command.
