Multiple users access an Actuate report library - .rol
Q. Is it possible for more than one user to access a .rol at the same
time?
A. Yes, it is possible. The file attribute will have to be changed
to read only at the network level.
For example, say you have an an NT machine which is accessible
across a network and you are going to use this as your file server.
You copy an existing .rol into a subdirectory on this NT machine. On
NT, you set file attributes at the subdirectory level. So, you would
right-click on the subdirectory containing the .rol -> choose
Sharing ... -> click on the Sharing tab -> click the Shared As radio
button -> click Permissions -> next to Type of Access, choose Read for
a particular user or group of users. (Note that a globe icon next
to a user group indicates users across a network, the two heads icon
indicates a user group actually on that local NT machine).
On the Sharing tab, you are also allowed to choose a certain number
of users who will have access to the .rol at the same time, or you can
accept the default maximum number. (On NT workstations, this maximum
is ten. On NT servers, this maximum depend on how many users you are
licensed for).
To allow a user privileges to actually make changes to the .rol, you
will have to give that user Read/Write or Full Control permissions -
but then other users will not be able to open the .rol until the
Full Control user has closed the .rol.
Note: There is a check box marked "open as read-only" when you select
File -> Include Module. This check box has no effect when including
.rol files. This is a bug which is scheduled to be fixed in a future
version.
