FACT(s) (Environment):

OpenEdge 10.x
Windows

SYMPTOM(s):

Searching for files with extended characters in the name with the 4GL UTF-8 client fails to find the file.

Search statement does not find files with extended characters in the name.

CAUSE:

The extended characters that are being used to create the file name have been copied from the Windows Character Map tool. These characters are in Unicode format not UTF-8 Unicode format. So the Progress UTF-8 Unicode client cannot find these files. Effectively it is looking for a file with different characters in its name.

FIX:

To prevent this from occurring it is better to avoid using extended characters in the name of any file and restrict them to pure ASCII names. If this has to be done, do not create the file manually using the Windows Character Map tool. Create it with the UTF-8 4GL client and the name will have the correct characters and encoding.
