SYMPTOM(s):

Error 6597 running proutil -C conv89

The database must be a multi-volume db before the conversion. (6597)

Database is already multi-volume.

Version 8 database was created on an operating system different from the one where proutil -C conv89 is running.

CAUSE:

A database cannot be ported from one operating system to another directly. Therefore it's not possible, for example, to convert a version 8 database created on HP-UX via the version 9 utilities of Progress for Linux.

FIX:

The only supported way (and often the only possible one) for porting a database across different operating systems is via dump and load.

For the case in question, it is possible to dump the version 8 database and load it directly in version 9; the dump and load operation can be done via binary dump and load, as the .bd files resulting from a binary dump are portable across platforms and from one version to the next major version.

Please keep in mind that it would be advisable to turn the downtime that ensues from a dump and load into an opportunity for revising the overall architecture of your database and, for example, consider reviewing your database block size and implementing Storage Areas.
