GOAL:

How to access version 6 database from Progress 8 environment?

FACT(s) (Environment):

Progress 6.x
Progress 8.x
All Supported Operating Systems

FIX:

When needing to access a Progress 6 database from a Progress 8.x environment, it is not necessary to install the version 6 installation /if/ the version 6 database was truncated before it was backed up as is good practice.
STEPS:
1.) Please make sure that a valid baseline restore point for the version 6 database exists. If the conversion fails for whatever reason, going to the backup baseline is the only way forward.
2.) From the Progress 8.x environment where the DLC and PATH environment variables have been correctly set run:
$ proutil dbname -C conv68
answer y to the prompted question:
"You must have your database backed up before running the conversion. (1024)
Have you done this (y
) ?"
The conversion will then take place and end with message:
Schema conversion complete, processed <num> fields (3692)
Conversion succeeded. (5121)
