Progress 9.x
OpenEdge 10.x
All Supported Operating Systems
OpenEdge Category: Database

FIX:

The PROREST Utility can be used to restore a full or incremental backup of a database or verify the integrity of a database backup.

Command Syntax: prorest db-name device-name {-vp | -vf | -list}

db-name

Specifies the name of the database being restored. The database name does not have to be the same name of the database that was backed up.

device-name

Identifies the directory pathname of the input device such as a tape drive or a standard file from which to restore the data. If device-name identifies a block or character special device, Progress assumes the device has removable media, such as a tape or a floppy diskette.

There is no ability to read or write backup tapes from previous versions of the Progress database. When restoring a backup, the target database must contain the same physical structure as the backup version. For example, it must have the same number of storage areas, records per block, and block size.

-vp

Specifies that the restore utility reads the backup volumes to compute and compare th.e backup block cyclic redundancy checks (CRC?s) with those in the block headers. To recover any data from a bad block, you must have specified a redundancy factor when the database was backed up.

-vf

- Specifies that the restore utility only compares the backup to the database block for block. The partial verify parameter works both with online and offline backups.

-list

Provides a description of all application data storage areas contained within a database backup. Use the information to create a new structure description file and database to restore the backup into.
Before restoring a database, verify that the backup does not contain any corrupted blocks. Use the PROREST utility to verify the integrity of a full or incremental backup of a database by using the Partial Verify or Full Verify parameters. The Partial Verify or Full Verify parameters do not restore or alter the database. The PROREST utility must be run separately to restore the database. Use the Full Verify parameter immediately after performing an offline backup to verify that the backup is correct.
