This is not reproducible in the previous Progress 8.3 versions
The error message does not occur in version 9.
CAUSE:
Bug# 20010703-001
FIX:
On Unix V4, apply the Patch 8.3D07.
On other operating systems, upgrade to Progress 8.3E or higher.
