CTOS III 3.4 1993 Unisys op sys release Compatible versions
Unisys has released a major revision update to the CTOS operating
system, CTOS III 3.4. It is also a maintenance release to CTOS II.
Demand-paged, virtual memory is a new mode of memory management for
CTOS that provides more efficient utilization of available work-
station memory. Although not a replacement for workstation memory
(RAM), demand-paged, virtual memory management allows more system
services and application programs to be represented in workstation
memory than before, ready for immediate execution - via demand paging.
With BTOS II and CTOS II, when an application would not fit in
available memory, some other application had to be suspended -- it
could no longer run. Furthermore, the syspended application would be
entirely swapped out of memory to disk. So, in BTOS II and CTOS II,
an application would be either entirely memory resident, or
suspended and entirely swapped out of memory.
With CTOS III demand-paged, virtual memory management, when a new
application won't fit into memory, other applications are not
necessarily suspended and swapped. Because all programs are divided
into 4KB pages, and mapped to available 4KB memory frames, they,
along with the new application, continue to run. Only the pages
not being used are swapped out to disk. Pages are made resident as
they are needed, on a demand basis.
Therefore, CTOS III, in general, will do a better job (but not
necessarily faster or slower) of servicing any B38, B39, SG2000, or
SG5000 workstation assuming appropriate memory is available.
CTOS III demand-paged, virtual memory management supports the
execution of almost all existing CTOS applications. CTOS III requires
exclusive ownership of workstation Direct Memory Addressing (DMA).
Those few application programs, i.e., a few system services, need
only minor changes to run under CTOS III.
BUNDLED PRODUCTS COMPATIBILITY VERSIONS
- Standard Software, Version 12.2: A set of utilities, libraries, and
system services that provide users with the ability to configure,
management, and administer their CTOS hardware and software
environments.
- CTOS User Interface (CUI), Version 1.0: CUI provides VGA-capable
CTOS III workstations the ability to deploy the common "look and
feel" of Presentation Manager's industry-standard GUI.
- Video Access Management (VAM), Version 4.0: VAM is the installable
video access manager. It consists of a suite of programs and fonts
allowing users to take advantage of the various monitors supported
by CTOS.
- Context/Window Manager, Version 4.1: Context/Window Manager is a
software product that allows users to run several applications
simultaneously and to "hot key" from one to another instantly.
- Batch Manager II, Version 2.3: Batch Manager is a set of
applications and utilities that enables users to execute batch jobs
under the control of Job Control Language (JCL) files. These jobs
may be submitted and executed in either a foreground or a
background partition. It is primarily used for installing system
services, the execution of timed jobs, and installing software
via the Installation Manager.
- Generic Print Service (GPS), Version 2.5.6: GPS is comprised of a
system service, management utilities, and a collection of printer
driver system services that allow printing from one workstation to
to any supported printer in a cluster or network to which the
workstation has access.
