GOAL:
Can RAID 1 be used for both AI and BI?
GOAL:
Is RAID 1 recommended for AI and BI?
FACT(s) (Environment):
All Supported Operating Systems
Progress/OpenEdge Product Family
FIX:
Yes, you can do it.
Raid 1 is a mirroring solution and Data is written in Block to 2 separate drives.
But:
It is still best to keep ai data on a volume separate from the bi if possible. As well as separate from the data extents.
The reason is that:
If the disk that contains the data extents fails, a previous backup of the database can be restored and the ai logs used to recover transactions executed after the backup. But if the ai logs are on the same drive as the data extents, you lose them along with the data extents.
If the disk that contains the bi log fails, a previous backup of the database can be restored and the ai logs used to recover transactions executed after the backup. But if the ai logs are on the same drive as the bi log, they will be lost along with the bi log.
Using mirroring with ai and bi reduces the chances of a failure for some types of failures. But it will not protect against someone typing "rm *" in the wrong place.
