FACT(s) (Environment):
Progress 9.x
Windows 2003
SYMPTOM(s):
Database fails to start through ProControl with error:
Invalid working directory (5273)
ProService is started with Domain Administrator account
Database resides on a mapped drive
Physical path to the database is used
Mapped drive security shows Everyone has full control
Can proserve database from proenv session
Copying database to a local directory starts database
Permissions on Working Directory = Read, Write
No spaces in the path
Problem does not happen on Windows 2000 server
Cannot start database using Progress Explorer tool
CAUSE:
Using the physical path to the database which will fail immediately. As stated by Microsoft, "A service should not directly access local or network resources through mapped drive letters. ... A service (or any process running in a different security context) that must access a remote resource should use the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) name to access the resource." This applies to the ProService upon which ProControl is reliant.
FIX:
Use the UNC path to the database
