Kbase 16960: NFS Support with Progress Software

GOAL:

How does Progress work in an NFS environment?

FACT(s) (Environment):

UNIX
Progress/OpenEdge Product Family
OpenEdge Category: Database

FIX:

Many users are installing on an NFS based file system and are encountering problems while running Progress. Progress Software works the same way in a remote or NFS environment as it would on a local file system. Two of the most common problems that are being reported are as follows:

1. Exiting to the Operating System and issuing a OS command will not always return the correct information.

2. Putting the source code on the file system may cause Progress to not always be able to find the code.

If you are running into either of the above issues then test the issue locally. If it works without giving an error then you will know that the issue is with your NFS file system mounting package. You may want to try using a different NFS package. Progress can not recommend one package over another.

Progress 9.1C in all platform except Linux remove the limitation prohibiting the use of NFS and allowing the use of NFS-mounted storage solutions where appropriate.
Progress 9.1E01 removed the limitation prohibiting the use of NFS for database extents for Linux platforms. Please check the solution P101496, "Progress 9.1E support for NFS on Linux?" for more information about the minimum requirements.
