8.2 Windows Network Installation

(KBase 16942 updated 9/8/97)

PROGRESS Release Notes for Version 8.2A (Windows) state:

"Starting with Version 8.2A, PROGRESS follows the Microsoft
Windows 32-bit application standard. Due to the complex
configuration which the install program performs on the
installing PC, PROGRESS can no longer be shared from a
network installation."

This statement has confused many of our customers. Version 8.2A
may no longer be installed on one PC and then simply have its
files copied to other PCs or to shared drives for other PCs to
use as has been done in the past.

There are two ways to get the capability to do a network
installation of Version 8.2A. PLEASE NOTE: Option 1 is
preferred.

Option 1: Use the netsetup.exe patch which implements network
installation capability.

This patch was made available in August 1997. PLEASE NOTE: The
patch will be available only until Version 8.2B for Windows is
released. Network installation capability will be included with
the 8.2B Windows commercial release.

The netsetup.exe patch is available via FTP. For more information
refer to the README.FTP file at the following location:
ftp://pscgate.progress.com/pub/patch/NETINSTALL/

You may access the files in the NETINSTALL directory using a Web
browser or ftp utility.

The README.FTP file on the page noted above gives instructions
about how to download and install the patch.

The netsetup.exe patch is also available for order. The patch
version to order is 8.2A07.

Option 2: Install the software to a mapped drive that is shared
amongst several PCs on the network.

After the installation on each PC has been finished, the PCs may run
from these shared files. It is not necessary to install the software
to local hard drives on each PC.

For instance, all PCs might access a shared volume on a file server
as Drive S:. Version 8.2A must be installed on each PC. When the
installation prompts for the drive letter and subdirectory in which
to install the software, for our example the user should specify
S:\DLC\.

The software is then stored on the shared drive and the Windows
Registry on that one PC is updated properly. The user then must go
to the second PC and do exactly the same thing again (overwriting
the contents of S:\DLC\ in the process). The same actions must be
repeated on the third PC, the fourth PC and so on. Once the
installations have been completed on all systems, all PCs will
operate from the same shared files on logical Drive S: and all
PCs will have properly updated Windows Registries.

The installation must be to mapped drive letters. UNC file names are
not supported.
