FACT(s) (Environment):
Windows 98
SYMPTOM(s):
GPF in prowin32 when printing.
gdi.exe GPF when printing.
printing correctly with other printers before adding the new printer
Other Windows applications print
Dr. Watson shows errors in gdi.exe
CHANGE:
installed a new printer using default driver
CAUSE:
File corruption or virus issue in gdi.exe
FIX:
Run Dr. Watson while reproducing the problem to get the information about the stack trace, installation details, etc. This will allow confirming if it is gdi.exe the program causing the error.
Retrieve a correct gdi.exe.
These are the different possibilities in order to retrieve it:
1. retrieve the file from the backup. Check if the backup file and the current one have the same size and date.
2. Reinstall Windows 98.
3. Copy the file from another Windows 98 installation (with the same version).
