GOAL:

What is to consider (in terms of db safety) when shutting down Unix services?

FIX:

In some cases, you have a lot of Unix services running, like udp-protocol services, tcp-protocol services, graphics adaptor, volume manager etc, and you want to shut them down to clean up on your machine without harming the running databases. Actually, the only potential service that should be connected to the Progress db is the working tcp one. However, since the safety of a running db should have priority in any case make sure that you have a valid backup before killing services. The safest thing is to test this before with a test db in order to know which tcp service is used by the db.
