DTterm hangs when trying to access Dictionary from Editor.
The purpose of this kbase is to assist customers as well as technical
support personnel with issues regarding HPUX 10.20 and dtterm pseudo
terminals.
HP has been releasing CDE (Common Desktop Environment) with HPUX.
This is a Motif environment which is goaled at replacing the original
HPVue interface.
The default terminal for this Motif Interface is dtterm. This is a
pseudo terminal - pretty similar to hpterm. They are not "real"
terminals. They are pseudo terminals. As such, we do not currently
supply an entry in our protermcap file for them.
Problem:
--------
I have had a customer experiencing problems when trying to access
the dictionary from the editor. Scenario is to bring up a dtterm
window. Then set TERM=xterm;export TERM. Now access editor using
pro. Once in the editor, use dict and then control X to access
the dictionary. Behavior the customer was seeing was that they hung.
Resolution:
-----------
If you bring up a true xterm window and then execute Progress within
that terminal entry, everything works fine. The problem appears to
be with the specific dtterm executable which was released by HP. I
run dtterm with Tri-Teal CDE implementation and it functions fine.
As we do not support CDE interface, the recommendations would be:
1. Test it with a true Motif implementation. Either Mwm or
use a Fail Safe session. Invoke xterm &. Then execute pro from
this terminal window. It should work fine.
2. Contact HP regarding any patches which deal with dtterm and its
implementation of pty, verses tty implementation.
Note: As HP does appear to be making this their default terminal
type as part of this Motif Interface, I have added an
enhancement request to see if we can add this entry in future
releases of Progress.
