When PROBKUP to an HP drive fails; SCO openserver 5
DRAFT COPY - Currently under review and edit.
INTRODUCTION:
=============
This Progress Technical Knowledgebase entry discusses a problem we
have seen when attempting a PROBKUP on SCO openserver 5 to an HP
drive.
WHY YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS:
===========================
If you attempt to perform a PROBKUP on a SCO openserver 5 system to
an HP drive that is set to variable block size, you may see any of the
the following errors:
If you attempt to write directly to the tape drive, when you try to
restore your database so see
SYSTEM ERROR: CRC failure on backup header block (1058)
<backup device> is not a Progress backup volume (1059)
CRC check error reading backup block <block-num> (1147)
Restore failed. (1618)
If you try to write to tape using -red -vp and -vf, when you try to
restore you will see
Unable to recover previous block in error (1104)
PROCEDURAL APPROACH:
====================
To avoid this problem set the block size of your device to a fixed
value (such as 512, 1024, 2048, 8192, 16384 or 32768) by using the
following syntax: tape -a blocksize setblk /dev/rStp1.
