Making business decisions to upgrade to the latest Progress 9.1 minor release (Progress 9.1E) or to migrate to the next major release version (OpenEdge 10.x) should be based on understanding Progress' Life Cycle terminology and adapting the status of an application life cycle to this. For example, if development of an application is still ongoing, then OpenEdge 10.x is definitely the best path forward as this product is currently in the "ACTIVE" phase.
From the Product Life Cycle Guide:
"Active Phase products are fully supported and receive new features and enhancements. Progress recommends that customers begin all new projects with Active Phase products, and migrate existing applications to Active Phase products as soon as possible. If problems are found in an Active Phase product, Progress Technical Support will work with customers towards an appropriate resolution if their licenses are covered under Standard or Extended 24/7 Support. Active Phase products will be evaluated for certifications on new operating environments."
Please note that the Product Availability Guide and Reference should be regularly reviewed to keep up-to-date with the latest platform certifications and to ensure that a given operating system is still supported in OpenEdge 10.x.
With the exception of Progress 9.1E, All other Progress 9.1x releases are in the "RETIRED" phase. This includes Progress 9.1D, which was retired on 01/01/2005. Please be aware that no further bug fixes, enhancements or product certifications will take place for these versions. Standard support will continue but on a "best effort" basis. Additional user counts for existing licenses can still be purchased.
Progress 9.1E has moved to "MATURE" phase. This means:
- Mature Phase products do not receive new features and support services are limited.
- Applications built on Mature Phase can continue to be deployed., however, Progress strongly recommends that customers use newer versions to build next-generation
products.
- Mature Phase products will NOT be evaluated for certifications on new operating environments.
At the time of this writing, no date has been set for the retirement of Progress 9.1E.
It would be best to contact your Progress Account Manager to discuss your individual details further.
