GOAL:
Is the DataServer for Oracle compatible with the Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) product?
GOAL:
Is the DataServer for Oracle supported with the Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) product?
FACT(s) (Environment):
Oracle DataServer
Progress 9.1x
OpenEdge 10.x
All Supported Operating Systems
FIX:
Support for Oracle RAC (Real Application Clusters) relies on the client being RAC-aware, and special coding needs to be added to the client.
Oracle RAC Client support started with Oracle 8i, which means that the Progress V9 DataServer (based on the Oracle 7 client interface) is technically unable to be made RAC-aware. OpenEdge 10 is based on the Oracle 8i client interface, but no additional code has been added to make the DataServer client RAC-aware.
There are no plans to enhance the technology in the Progress DataServer for Oracle for it to become truly 'cluster failover' aware.
In theory the Progress and OpenEdge DataServers should work against a RAC database, but without the failover transparency (session content management) that a true RAC-aware client can achieve. The Oracle RAC Database should be able to support non-RAC-aware clients, but any certification guarantee (and support) for this must come from Oracle.
