What does PROGRESS/COPY or PROCOPY do?
INTRODUCTION:
=============
This Technical Support KnowledgeBase entry is a description of what
the PROGRESS COPY does.
WHY YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS:
===========================
To gain a better understanding of the PROGRESS COPY utility.
PROGRESS COPY is most commonly used when going from a single-volume
database to a multi-volume database structure. PROGRESS takes a group
of blocks from the single-volume structure and copies it to the first
extent (.d1) in the multi-volume structure, until there are no more
blocks available in the first extent. Then it begins copying
blocks to the second extent (.d2) until there are no more available
blocks in the second extent, and then it begins copying blocks to
the third extent (.d3) etc., until the single-volume database
has been completely copied.
The master block of the single-volume database is copied to the first
extent (.d1). It becomes the master block of the multi-volume
structure.
If there is fragmentation in the single-volume database, PROGRESS
copies block for block, into the new multi-volume database.
