DRAFT COPY - Currently under review and edit.
INTRODUCTION:
=============
This Product Services Technical Support Knowledgebase entry describes
what to do when you get a SYSTEM ERROR: Read of <backup device>
failed...." (1052) listed in your log file.
WHY YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS:
===========================
We have found that this error normally indicates some problem with
your hardware, but not always. There are occasions when this error
message is generated when there is corruption in your PROGRESS
executable.
PROCEDURAL APPROACH:
====================
If you are receiving (1052) errors in your log file, the first and
simplest course of action is to clean the heads of your disk drive.
If you continue to receive the error you should have your hardware
vendor perform diagnostics to verify whether there is hardware
corruption present. If you continue to receive this error, it is
possible that your PROGRESS executable has become corrupted. If this
is the case, reinstalling PROGRESS will resolve the problem.
