GOAL:
Does Progress support msi files for Client PC installation?
GOAL:
Support for Windows Installer (MSI) Technology
GOAL:
Is there a way to create an msi file without license information which can than be customized to add a particular customer's Progress license
GOAL:
Is it possible to provide the Netsetup installation in an MSI package ?
FACT(s) (Environment):
Windows
Progress 9.x
OpenEdge 10.x
FIX:
Most new Versions of Software are being deployed with "Windows Installer" technology (which creates MSI-Setup-Files for Windows platforms).
There are however, no current plans to adopt the Microsoft Windows Installer Service model for Progress installations as there hasn't been a specific requirement identified for this change to date. Please discuss this with your Progress Account Manager if you have such a business need.
Were it to be adopted, this would require a substantial undertaking including amongst others: a completely new install program and new tools to convert the Product Identifier Database, which is used to identify which products are part of which archives and licenses. In addition, the model does not work on UNIX so this would necessitate maintaining two sets of source.
We cannot advise as to the modification of install routines because if anything goes wrong, the method will be unsupported. The only method of installation that are supported are to install Progress from the CD provided or from an Electronic Software Distribution (ESD) download and then to apply the required Service Packs as needed. Once a full installation has been completed, Silent install is also a supported method as described in the Progress Documentation.
