GOAL:

Can installing the Progress Enterprise Database product on a Microsoft Windows Server bring a network service down?

FIX:

Not normally.

When the Progress Enterprise Database product is installed on Windows machine a Progress AdminService is also loaded and the configured with a default setting for this to auto start.

This component uses ports 20931 and 8735 when default settings are used. If there were Internet processes assigned to these ports and they started after the Progress AdminService when Windows machine is started then those ports would be found busy by the Internet processes and they would fail to start. However, if the Internet processes were started before the Progress AdminService, the AdminService would fail to start as the ports would be already in use.

If this occurs the ports for the ports used by the Internet processes must be changed or the ports used by the Progress AdminService must be changed. To changed the ports used by the Progress AdminService refer to solution P10465
