Moving the Directory of an Installed 8.2 Release (Big No-No)

This knowledgebase entry explains why moving an installed copy of
Progress Version 8.2 (or any 32-Bit Windows version of Progress) to
any other directory will wreak havoc with the Progress installation
and is considered to be a "BIG (and I do mean BIG) NO-NO".

Basically, it's like this...

All 32-Bit MS-Windows versions of Progress install a large amount of
installation and system information into the Windows Registry during
installation of the product.

This information includes all of the settings which used to be in the
PROGRESS.INI file in the older 16-Bit versions of Progress.

Moving and/or renaming the directory into which you have installed a
32-Bit version of Progress makes all of the registry settings invalid.
This means that once you move the Progress directory and even change
all of the icons which startup Progress so that they point to the new
location, you will get errors when trying to run Progress because the
information which was installed into the registry during installation
still points to the old location.

If you are an expert at manipulating the system registry, it is
possible to change all of the registry keys which Progress uses so
that they point to the new location, but it is very important to
remember that the registry is the "brains" of your Windows
installation and one false move (or wrong keystroke) can render your
entire Windows installation unusable!!!! If this happens to you, you
really have no choice but to pull out the installation disk and CDROM
for Windows and reinstall.

Given how easy it is to render a Windows installation unusable when
manipulating the system registry, Technical Support cannot help you
in modifying the registry such that is "re-enables" your Progress
installation.

We recommend that if you need to move and/or rename the directory
into which you installed Progress you follow these steps:

1) Remove the existing installation by clicking the UNINSTALL icon
which was installed into your Progress group during the
installation.

2) Reinstall Progress into the new location.
