GOAL:

How to enable message compression between the OpenEdge client and AppServer?

GOAL:

What is the -mc parameter?

FACT(s) (Environment):

Progress 9.1D
Progress 9.1E
OpenEdge 10.x

FIX:

In order to decrease the traffic between the Progress client and appserver, the -mc client parameter allows the message between the client and the AppServer to be compressed.

The message compression startup parameter, -mc, should be set only for Progress clients talking to compatible AppServers. Even though both AppServer and clients needs to be prepare to handle message compression, only the client needs to have the parameter -mc added to its startup. Nothing is required on the server side to enable message compression.

Regardless, it is important to remember that compression will be disabled when clients that turn on compression connect to AppServers that do not have this capability. The -mc startup parameter is available starting with Progress 9.1D08.
