GOAL:

Does the -vs parameter apply to all backup extents?

GOAL:

Can the -vs be used to specify different sizes for each individual backup extent?

FIX:

-vs parameter indicates the maximum backup extent size by database blocks, termed the "volume size", that is, the number of blocks that can be written to each removable volume. It is only specified it once when issuing the probkup command and therefore relates to every volume.
Previously, in V7 and before, the default block size on the OS dictated the database block size, hence, the OS blocksize was the database blocksize. The introduction of variable block size in V8 (and higher), the -vs parameter value now references the database block size, where units are in in database blocks, not in Kb or Mb. In the case of tapes, the value of n should be set lower than the size of the tapes that are being used and greater than the blocking factor (-bf) depending on the database block size (and the number of Storage Areas in Version 9 and above). In the case of file volumes, the value of n should be the considered available physical filesize of each volume divided by the database blocksize.

If you do not use the Volume Size parameter, PROBKUP assumes there is no limit and writes the backup until completion or until the volume (tape or available disc space or user limit) is full. When the volume is full, PROBKUP prompts you for the next volume.
