Intersolv 16-Bit ODBC Driver Documentation

Progress and Intersolv have formed a joint marketing and development
partnership to provide customers with an ODBC driver for the
Progress RDBMS.

INTERSOLV ODBC Driver for Progress:
==================================

The INTERSOLV ODBC Driver for Progress is the
software interface that allows ODBC-compliant
applications to access data in local or remote Progress
databases.

What is ODBC?
The Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) interface,
established by Microsoft Corporation, allows
applications to access data in database management
systems (DBMS) using Structured Query Language
(SQL).

The ODBC interface permits interoperability -- a
single Windows application can access heterogeneous
DBMSs. This allows application developers to
program, compile, and ship applications without
targeting a specific DBMS. Users add modules, called
database drivers, that link the applications to their
choice of database management systems.

Overview
The INTERSOLV ODBC Driver for Progress is an
important link for users of Windows desktop
applications who need transparent access to Progress
databases. Windows users can be insulated from the
complexities of the client/server environment, yet still
work with Progress databases located on a variety of
server platforms.

Most vendors solve only one side of the ODBC
equation: either they supply an ODBC data server to
manage several data sources, or they offer an ODBC
driver to permit access to their DBMS. Progress
Software provides a complete solution to the problem
of interoperability and integration in a Windows
environment. The INTERSOLV ODBC Driver for
Progress ensures that the Progress Relational Database
Management System (RDBMS) is accessible from
ODBC-compliant applications, while the ODBC
DataServer enables Progress applications to access
non-Progress data sources.
Benefits
The INTERSOLV ODBC Driver for Progress provides
easy, economical, and efficient access to Progress
e network with the INTERSOLV ODBC Driver for Progress.
ODBC-compliant ODBC-compliant applications access Progress
databases along with other
DBMSs on an as-needed basis, regardless of their
physical locations on the network.

Simplifies Application Development and Maintenance
With the INTERSOLV ODBC Driver for Progress,
programmers can use the ADE of their choice to
develop applications that access Progress databases.
Knowledge of the Progress RDBMS is not required.
Ensures Compatibility with Popular Windows
Applications
The INTERSOLV ODBC Driver for Progress is tested
and supported for use with most popular Windows
client applications.
Supports 16-bit and 32-bit environments
Two versions of the INTERSOLV ODBC Driver for
Progress -- 16 bit and 32 bit -- ensure compatibility
with older, established Windows 3.1 application suites,
as well as newer Windows `95 and WinNT
environments. The 32-bit version is scheduled to ship in
late 1996.
Highlights
Local or remote access to Progress databases
Seamless access to Progress databases in a
distributed environment
16 bit version available, 32-bit scheduled
Support for use with 16-bit applications: MS-
Excel, MS-Query, Paradox, PowerBuilder,
Crystal Reports, Impromptu, Business Objects,
Delphi and Foxpro. Other applications that
support ODBC are expected to work as well.

Limitations:

The driver supports MS-Access for read-only; it
does not work reliably for updates. Full support
for MS-Access will not be available in 1996.

The driver is not reliable with Access and Visual
Basic in local OID configurations, but may be
usable in remote OID configurations.

32-bit applications (e.g. MS-Office95) require
the forthcoming 32-bit driver.

Specifications:

Standards Compliance: ODBC Specification V2
Platform Support: MS-Windows 3.1+, Windows 95
Note: WinNT client is NOT supported with the
Intersolv ODBC Driver 16-bit (plans are to support
WinNT client with the 32-bit driver).

Product Prerequisites:

Progress Windows Client, Version 8.0A (or higher)
must be commercial release (no betas or pre-releases).
Note: support for Progress for MS-Windows 7.3D+ is
scheduled for late 1996.

For the Intersolv ODBC driver to access Progress
databases, you must install a Progress product that
includes a component called the "Open Interface
Driver", either on the client or on the server.
Any of the following products will suffice. Be sure
you install the Open Interface Driver Option.
Enterprise ProVISION
ProVISION
4GL Development System
Client Networking
Query Results
Personal Database
Workgroup DataServer
Enterprise DataServer
Oracle DataServer
Sybase DataServer

Configurations Supported:

The following configurations have been tested and are
supported:
1. local OID in direct (or self service) mode, only for
Progress 8.0A+ databases
2. local OID to local server, only for Progress 8.0A+
databases
3. remote UNIX 7.3C+ OID in direct (or self service)
mode to UNIX 7.3C+ databases
4. remote UNIX 7.3C+ OID to remote UNIX 7.3C+
Servers
5. remote NT 7.3B OID in direct (or self service)
mode to NT 7.3B Servers
6. local OID via server to NT versions 7.3B, 8.0B
and UNIX versions 7.3C+, 8.0B+ remote Servers

Progress for MS-Windows 8.0A can NOT connect to
8.0B remote OIDs on any platform.

Customer Support:

The INTERSOLV ODBC driver includes 30 days free
support service direct from INTERSOLV. The 30 day
warranty period begins the first time the customer calls
for technical support. This service provides:
unlimited phone support (through a direct call to
INTERSOLV or as a pass through call from
Progress Technical Support to INTERSOLV
support center),
call entry via CompuServe,
bug fixes and patches as required.
Customers call INTERSOLV Support at 1-800-443-1601
and use the serial number that is located on their
registration card.

Beyond the 30 day period, annual maintenance
