WebSpeed Client Connections to Progress Database Servers
========================================================

This knowledgebase entry describes access to the various Progress
database versions by a WebSpeed 1.0 client.

WebSpeed 1.0 can connect self-service and client/server to any 8.0B
database server.

WebSpeed 1.0 can connect client/server to any 8.1A database server.
server. (Please note: although WebSpeed 1.0 can connect to an 8.1
database, it can not take advantage of 8.1 functionality such as the
Progress AppServer.)

WebSpeed 1.0 can connect client/server to any version 7 database
server.

WebSpeed clients can NOT connect to any databases below version 7.

A self-service connection is one where the client is local to the
machine the database server is running on. Self-service indicates
the client process connects directly to shared memory. For self-
service connections, the database server and client must be of the
same internal shared memory versions, which is the case for Progress
8.0 and WebSpeed 1.0.

If the client and the server are different versions, the connection
must be client/server due to the differences in internal shared
memory structures. This is the case for connections from WebSpeed
1.0 to v7 or v8.1 databases.

In a client/server connection, the client does not connect to
shared memory directly, but accesses via a server process. The
client can be on the same machine as the database server or on a
remote system. To connect client/server, the -H and -S startup
parameters are used. Refer to the PROGRESS System Administration
Reference manual for more information on these startup parameters.
